(NEWSER) – Sorry, Detroit. Forbes is out with its annual list of the most miserable cities in America, which takes into account not only obvious factors such as unemployment and crime, but also things like taxes, foreclosures, home prices, and commute times. Some highlights:
- The worst five: Detroit leads the way, followed by Flint, Michigan; Rockford, Illinois; Chicago; and Modesto, California. (Cities in Michigan, Illinois, and California made up nine of the top 10.)
- New York City: Yep, it cracks the list at No. 10, thanks in part to brutal commutes and high taxes. Like Chicago, it offers plenty of opportunity, "but it isn’t easy living in either city, particularly if you don’t earn a lot of money," writes Kurt Badenhausen.
