The Baltimore Orioles have traded pitcher Yovani Gallardo to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for outfielder Seth Smith.
Gallardo was acquired from the Texas Rangers before last season and struggled. In 23 games in 2016, he had a 6-8 record with a 5.42 ERA, giving up 16 home runs. Gallardo had a few excellent starts during the 2016 season but struggled with consistency and was often pulled early from high pitch counts.
Smith is a veteran outfielder who has played for the Colorado Rockies, Oakland A's and San Diego Padres in addition to his past two seasons in Seattle. He is a career .261 batter and hit .249 in 2016 with 16 HR's and 63 RBI's.
The Orioles also included cash considerations into the deal. Gallardo is owed $13M in 2017 versus Smith's $7M, meaning it is likely the team will create some room against the salary cap to presumably look for Gallardo's replacement in the starting rotation.
