A ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips is going to the full Senate after being approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee.  The bill from California Democrat Dianne Feinstein was prompted by December's school shooting massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.  The committee vote fell along party lines, 10-8.

The measure faces tough sledding in the deeply divided Senate.  The judiciary panel previously referred two related bills to the full Senate.  One aims to curb illicit gun trafficking and the other expands gun background checks.
