Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon will miss all of the 2014 NFL season. Any chance for reinstatement will not be allowed until the end of the season.
Gordon's suspension is for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The substance in question is marijuana.
In a statement, Gordon said:
"I'd like to apologize to my teammates, coaches, the Cleveland Browns organization and our fans. I am very disappointed that the NFL and its hearing office didn't exercise better discretion and judgment in my case."
The suspension will inevitably lead to comparisons to Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, who was recently suspended for two games. Rice was arrested for fighting his then-fiance Janay Palmer back in February. Footage shows Rice dragging an unconscious Palmer out of an elevator.
Deadspin notes that Gordon's appeal centered around the fact that only one of his two urine samples "failed" the test.
