Michael Sam was the SEC defensive player of the year and a first-team All American defensive lineman in 2013.
All of his teammates knew something about him that the public didn't.
Michael Sam is gay.
Sam is now talking publicly about his sexual orientation to the New York Times.
He told his teammates during a team building exercise last year. He tells the New York Times, "I looked in their eyes and they just started shaking their heads...like, finally, he came out."
No openly gay athlete has ever actively competed in the NFL, NBA, MLB, or NHL.
Sam came out because, "I just want to make sure I could tell my story the way I want to tell it."
Last year, NBA veteran Jason Collins announced that he was a homosexual. No team signed him this year.
In an article published by Sports Illustrated, many NFL executives and scouts (without the guts to put their name on their statements), said that Sam's announcement will hurt his draft stock.
