Calypso, the Famous 3-Flippered Turtle at the National Aquarium, Has Died

Calypso, the famous 3-flippered sea turtle who was a mainstay at the National Aquarium in Baltimore since 2002, has died unexpectedly according to a Facebook post by the Aquarium.

She came to the Aquarium after being discovered in the Long Island Sound with an infected front flipper which needed to be amputated. Afterwards, it was determined that Calypso would not do well back in the wild.

Calpyso was estimated to be around 6 lbs when she first came to Baltimore and grew to over 500 lbs in the 17+ years at the National Aquarium.

The staff at the Aquarium say Calypso seemed to be in good health and that her passing was a shock. Tests will be performed to try to determine a cause of death.
