Preakness Rescheduled for October 3, One Month After Kentucky Derby

The 145th Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the horse racing Triple Crown, has been rescheduled to take place on October 3rd.

On April 3rd, Preakness was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The race, which is held at Baltimore's Pimlico Race Course, is traditionally scheduled for the third Saturday in May and would have taken place this past weekend.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan made the announcement of the new date this weekend on NBC, who televise the race:

"Under normal circumstances, I would be standing at Pimlico... presenting the Woodlawn Trophy to the winner of the 145th Preakness Stakes. But as we all know these are not ordinary circumstances. However, I am proud to make this announcement on behalf of the state, the Maryland Jockey Club and Maryland’s historic racing industry that Preakness 145 will be held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, on Oct. 3."

The Kentucky Derby, originally scheduled for May 2nd, will now take place on September 5th. Organizers are still trying to determine a possible makeup date for the Belmont Stakes, traditionally the final leg of the Triple Crown.

No determination has been made in regards to spectators at Preakness and whether fans will be allowed to attend.
