A 15-year old boy went to Reddit to ask for legal advice after his parents installed surveillance cameras in his bedroom and bathroom so that he would stop masturbating.
The teen from Alaska says that while recently masturbating, an act that most normal boys his age do, his father caught him after barging into his room unannounced and screamed at him.
He says in the aftermath his parents sat down and had a talk with him afterwards. The boy says his parents are against any sexual activities before marriage and that they wouldn't even allow him to participate in sex-ed classes at school. The boy ultimately told his parents that he promised them he would stop masturbating and figured that was the end of it.
But shortly after, the teen says an Amazon package showed up at his house containing indoor surveillance cameras. "I asked my dad and he said they are putting them in my room and bathroom so they can monitor and make sure I'm not masturbating," he wrote.
He also said his parents told him they would be checking them every day to make sure he wasn't masturbating.
The 15-year-old asked the Reddit community for legal advice on the matter because it made him uncomfortable to know that he was being monitored while using his bathroom and bedroom. One user wrote to him, "Regardless of whether or not you're masturbating (which is completely normal), you need to have a reasonable amount of privacy while you're using the bathroom and changing."
A family law expect chimed in, adding "This is not a young child. I think a court would take it seriously what their rights are, that they're entitled to in their bathroom and in their bedroom." However, she believes the situation isn't enough for police or CPS to get involved "unless this is the tip of the iceberg and there's more to be discovered." She concluded by saying, "I think there's just some serious parenting classes that have to go on there."
