The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly "closing in" on hiring current offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as their next head coach, according to AllDLLS.com's Clarence Hill Jr.

"Look for the Cowboys to cross the finish line on hiring Brian Schottenheimer no later than Friday, possibly today," Hill wrote on his X account.

Schottenheimer, 41, the son of late former NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer, was hired by the Cowboys as a coaching analyst in 2022 and promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023. The Denver native previously worked as an offensive coordinator for the New York Jets (2006-11), then-St. Louis Rams (2012-14) and Seattle Seahawks (2018-20), quarterbacks coach for the now-Washington Commanders (2001), then-San Diego Chargers (2002-05) and Indianapolis Colts (2016-17), a passing coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 and an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the University of Georgia in 2015.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has previously hired all coaches with familiarity to the organization, having hired both Dave Campo and Jason Garrett after earlier stints as defensive and offensive coordinators with the team, respectively, despite no prior full-time head coaching experience, with Garrett having been promoted from interim head coach in 2011.

Schottenheimer was promoted from coaching analyst to offensive coordinator after Kellen Moore left to take the same position with the Philadelphia Eagles. Moore participated in a virtual interview with Dallas, but cannot be hired until after the Eagles' season is completed.

The Cowboys were also reported to have interviewed former NFL head coach and current Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier and former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh.
